IN THIS ARTICLE WE ARE GOING TO EXAMINE THE SCALE EQUIPMENT LTD. 1973 HURST/OLDS. LET ME START BY SAYING I HAD TO REDUCE THE SIZE OF THE COMPLETED CAR PHOTOS, AS THEY WERE VERY LARGE. WHEN YOU CLICK TO ENLARGE THEM, YOU WILL GET THE LOOK OF SLASH MARKS IN THE DECALS. IF YOU SUPER SIZE THEM, THAT SHOULD REMOVE MOST OF THAT ILLUSION. THIS CAR WAS MASTERED BY MIKE HANSON, A WELL KNOWN MASTER MODELER, AND DESIGNER. I FOUND THIS 1/25TH SCALE CAR BODY TO BE DEAD ON, A REALLY NICE JOB. IT IS A THIN CAST BODY, WHICH HAS ITS PROS AND CONS. EASIER TO ADAPT DIFFERENT CHASSIS AND PARTS TO, BUT A BIT MORE FRAGILE, AND PRONE TO WARP. THE BODY CASTING WAS NOT GREAT, HAVING SOME HOLES AND THIN BUBBLE MARKS IN IT. THE BACK OF THE ROOF SAGGED A BIT, BUT CAN BE CORRECTED. THE KIT RUNS ABOUT 100.00. IT IS A CURBSIDE KIT, BUT YOU COULD OPEN THE HOOD WITH A LITTLE EXTRA WORK. IT APPEARS THAT MOST OF THE PARTS WERE CAST FROM THE JOHAN PROMO. COMES WITH A PROMO TYPE CHASSIS WITH A SINGLE EXHAUST AND CONVERTER, SOMETHING THE 73 HURST/OLDS NEVER HAD. I ORIGINALLY WAS GOING TO USE IT AND HANG ANOTHER EXHAUST, BUT 3/4 OF THE WAY INTO THE BUILD I DECIDED TO TAKE ANOTHER ROUTE. KIT COMES WITH CHROMED PARTS THAT I FOUND THE PLATING TO BE FAIR AT BEST. IMPROPER PREP PRIOR TO CHROMING. INCLUDED WITH KIT ARE TWO SETS OF TIRES, ONE BEING FOR THE W-30 VERSION. WHEELS, 2 PIECE, RINGS CHROMED, INNER PART OF WHEELS WERE NOT CHROMED. HAS PARTS TO MAKE THE FRONT WHEELS STEERABLE. NICE PHOTO ETCH SHEET, AS WELL AS THE DECALS. VACUUM FORMED GLASS. COMES WITH A SHIFTER AND DUAL GATE SHIFT PLATE. ALSO OTHER PARTS TO COMPLETE THE CAR. MISSING ARE THE H/O EXHAUST TIPS, YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE THOSE. WITH ALL THAT SAID, I FIND THIS KIT TO BE WELL WORTH THE MONEY, AND A NICE EXAMPLE OF A HURST/OLDS. AS WITH ANY RESIN KIT THERE ARE SOME HURDLES, BUT NONE OF THESE ARE TO MAJOR. I HAD ALREADY PAINTED THE CAR CAMEO WHITE WHEN I DECIDED TO GO WITH ANOTHER CHASSIS, OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE CUT THE HOOD OPEN. I HAD A JOHAN PROMO 73 CUTLASS WITH A BROKEN PILLAR SO I CUT THE REAR SCREW PEGS OFF AND MOUNTED THEM TO THE HURST BODY. USING AN AMT 1969 OLDS 442 KIT, I CUT THE CHASSIS TO FIT THE BODY, AND USED THE AMT PARTS ON THE CHASSIS. LEAVING ME WITHOUT AN ENGINE PLATE, I PUT THE AMT ENGINE IN EVEN THOUGH THE HOOD DOES NOT OPEN. I MADE THE HURST EXHAUST TIPS FROM ALUMINUM. I DID NOT USE THE 2 PIECE WHEELS PROVIDED WITH RESIN KIT. I USED THE AMT WHEELS THAT ARE THE SAME WHEEL, THEY ARE CHROMED, AND I PAINTED THEM THE CORRECT WAY TO RESEMBLE THE 2 PIECE HURST WHEELS. THE KIT TIRES DO HAVE THE WHITE LETTER DECALS INCLUDED. THE DASH AND INTERIOR ARE THE TYPICAL JOHAN PROMO TYPE. NO CHARACTER IN THE AIR CONDITION PORTS, THAT WILL NEED TO BE DETAILED IN. DECALS PROVIDED GAUGES AND WOODGRAIN FOR THE RADIO AND INTERIOR SIDE PANELS, BUT NOT FOR THE LEFT SIDE OF THE GAUGES, THAT WAS DETAIL PAINTED TO MATCH THE OTHER SIDE. I THEN FOILED THE DASH AND FREE HANDED THE OLDSMOBILE INSIGNIA ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE DASH. KIT DOES HAVE THE CORRECT STEERING WHEEL WITH DECAL FOR THE CENTER. SEEING THAT I HAD A WRECKED PROMO, I USED THE GLASS FROM IT INSTEAD OF THE FORMED KIT GLASS. IT WAS EPOXIED TIGHT TO THE ROOF WHICH TOOK THE SAG OUT. NOTE> THE ROOF WARP MAY HAVE JUST BEEN ON THIS KIT AND NOT A COMMON PROBLEM, ALONG WITH THE BODY HOLES AND BUBBLES, INQUIRE WHEN YOU BUY. I FOLLOWED REFERENCE ON THIS BUILD FOILING THE EXTERIOR AND THE SPLIT SIGNAL LIGHTS, BEING AMBER TO THE SIDES AND CLEAR TO THE FRONT. THE GRILL WAS CAST AFTER THE JOHAN SO IT HAS THE OLDSMOBILE INSIGNIA IN IT, THE HURST/OLDS DOES NOT. I PAINTED OVER IT, YOU COULD CAREFULLY CUT IT OUT. BUMPERS HAVE THE PROPER RUBBER STRIPS PAINTED IN. CHASSIS WAS PAINTED FLAT BLACK TO RESEMBLE SOUND DEADENER, OR RUST PROOFING. I USED THE RED TAILIGHTS FROM THE PROMO, BLACKING OUT AROUND THEM FOR THE HURST/OLDS LOOK. THE CHASSIS WAS DRILLED AND SCREWED TO THE PEGS IN THE REAR, AND SCREWED THROUGH THE BUMPER TABS ON THE FRONT. AS AN OVER VIEW, THIS IS A VERY CORRECT KIT. AS FAR AS I KNOW SCALE EQUIPMENT LTD. IS THE ONLY PLACE TO GET THIS CAR. YOU WILL WANT TO CHECK THEM OUT. THEY HAVE A VERY NICE SELECTION OF CORRECT TIRES, PHOTO ETCH SETS, AND DECALS. THEY ALSO CARRY SOME OTHER RARE RESIN KITS, AND MORE. I WILL FOR SURE BUY MORE STUFF FROM THEM, SUCH AS TIRES THAT YOU CANNOT FIND ANYWHERE ELSE. THE HURST/OLDS A SPECIAL CAR THAT WAS NEARING ITS PERFORMANCE END, TO LINGER FOR A WHILE IN NAME AND TRIM ONLY. |
