LOOKING AT, AND BUILDING THE 1974 HURST/OLDS INDY PACE CAR. THIS IS A CUSTOMERS CAR. HE PURCHASED THIS RESIN BODY FROM A FRIEND WHO BOUGHT IT SEVERAL YEARS AGO AT A HOBBY SHOP. WE HAVE NO IDEA WHO CAST IT. IT IS THE SAME AS A JOHAN PROMO, EXCEPT IT HAS THE HOOD OPENED, AND HAD THE HURST HOOD LOUVER, AND THE HURST CROWN OVER THE ROOF. IT CAME WITH A CHASSIS, WHICH I USED, IT APPEARS TO BE COPIED FROM AN AMT 69 OLDS 442. THE INTERIOR, DASH, ETC WERE CAST AFTER THE JOHAN 74 PROMO. I HAVE SHOWN A PICTURE OF A JOHAN PROMO WITH A STRIP OF PLASTRUC 1/4" CHANNEL THAT WOULD WORK THE SAME WAY BY JUST SANDING THE CHANNEL EDGES DOWN, AND LEAVING JUST A LITTLE FOR THE CHROME EDGE STRIPS. THE HOOD COULD THEN BE OPENED, OR LEFT AS A CURBSIDE. THE HOOD LOUVER COULD BE CUT, OR SIMULATED. THE PACE CAR HAD FULL VINYL ROOF INCLUDING THE CROWN AND FRONT PILLARS. I USED MODEL MASTERS NEW 2 STEP VINYL ROOF SPRAY. YOU SPRAY ON A BASE COAT, THEN FROM 2 - 3 FEET AWAY YOU SPRAY THE TEXTURE, A SLICK SYSTEM. IT CAN BE SANDED A BIT TO ACHIEVE THE RIGHT TEXTURE DENSITY. THIS CAR WAS DONE AS THE CUTLASS S VERSION. PARTS USED ARE 69 AMT OLDS 442 DONER. SCALE EQUIPMENT LTD PARTS ARE 73 HURST/OLDS PHOTOETCH SHEET, 14" GOODYEAR POLYGLASS GT RADIALS, 73 HURST/OLDS SPORT STEERING WHEEL, 73 HURST/ OLDS DECAL SHEET, 73 HURST/OLDS OUTSIDE MIRRORS. THIS IS ALL AVAILABLE FROM SCALE EQUIPMENT LTD. IF YOU ARE MAKING THE W-30 VERSION YOU WOULD ORDER 15" RADIALS. THE 73 HURST/OLDS DECALS ARE USED FOR THE S INSIGNIA, GAUGES, WOODGRAIN DOOR PANELS, LICENSE PLATES, SIDE ROOF PILLAR H/O EMBLEMS, SHIFT CONSOLE H/O EMBLEM, AND TRUNK H/O EMBLEM. THE EXTERIOR WAS PAINTED FACTORY CAMEO WHITE AND FRED CADY 74 HURST/OLDS PACE CAR DECALS WERE USED. THE OUTSIDE MIRRORS WERE DECALED WITH THE PROPER GOLD AND BACK STRIPS. THE INTERIOR WAS COMPLETLY DETAILED, FOILED AND I USED THE HURST SHIFTER FROM THE 69 OLDS, CUT THE BOOT OFF, AND POSITIONED IT TO RESEMBLE THE FACTORY HURST AUTOMATIC SHIFT LEVER. THE GLASS IS VACUUM FORMED. INTERIOR IS BLACK WITH GRAY SEAT INSERTS. IN THE ENGINE BAY I CUT THE 69 OLDS FIREWALL TO FIT. AIR CONDITIONING WAS ADDED FROM A 68 ELCAMINO BY CUTTING THE AIR CONDITION BOX OFF THE FIREWALL AND ATTACHING IT TO THIS ONE, DRILLING HOLES FOR THE HIGH PRESSURE LINES. AND HEATER HOSES. THE OLDS ENGINE PULLEY HAD THE ALT. ON THE LEFT AND THE POWER STEERING ON THE RIGHT. I CUT THE ALT. BELT AT THE PULLY, FLIPPED IT OVER AND ATTACHED IT TO THE RIGHT SIDE, POSITIONING THE POWER STEERING PUMP BELOW IT. USING THE EL CAMINO AIR COMPRESSOR WITH BELT ATTACHED, I GLUED IT TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE AND HOOKED UP THE PRESSURE LINE. THIS IS THE PROPER OLDS CONFIGURATION. THE ROCKET ENGINE HAD A DUAL HORN AIR CLEANER. I CUT ONE OFF AND ATTACHED A PIECE OF RAM AIR TUBING TO THE OTHER FOR THE AIR FILTER BOX. REFERENCED BY THE REAL CAR. MASTER CYL. WAS ADDED AND THE RADIATOR SHROUD AND RADIATOR WERE MODIFIED TO FIT. THE RADIATOR TOP SUPPORT WAS CUT OFF THE 442 AND LENGTHENED WITH PLASTRUC TO FIT THIS CAR. BATTERY ADDED. ENGINE IS PLUMBED AND WIRED USING ARROWHEAD DISTRIBUTOR AND PLUG WIRES. ENGINE BAY WAS THEN DETAILED. THE CHASSIS WAS DONE WITH 69 442 SUSPENSION AND EXHAUST PARTS CHASSIS WAS ALTERED TO FIT PROPERLY. HURST/OLDS EXHAUST TIPS WERE SCRATCH BUILT FROM ALUMINUM. WHEELS ARE CORRECT OLDS FACTORY MAGS PAINTED WITH GOLD AND DETAILED CENTERS. THIS BUILD WAS FASHIONED FROM MY CLIENTS ACTUAL CAR, AS IS THE 73 HURST/OLDS FEATURED ON THIS SITE. AN UNUSUAL PROJECT WITH COUNTLESS HOURS INTO IT, BUT VERY REWARDING! THESE HURST/OLDSMOBILES REFLECT ON A DIFFERENT TIME, ONE THAT I WISH WAS STILL WITH US. AT LEAST THEY ARE HERE IN 1/25TH SCALE.
